You may never even think about it, but a recent NSP study (a public health and environmental organization) found that our refrigerator’s ice and water dispensers are loaded with yeast and mold, which wreak havoc on allergies! It’s hard to believe, but our refrigerator’s ice dispensers should be cleaned each month to prevent bacterial growth. It’s recommended that we turn the ice maker off and take the bin out, dump the ice, and wash the bin in warm soapy water. After rinsing and drying off, put the bin back and turn the ice maker back on. Also, once per year (twice is better) pour 3-4 cups of distilled white vinegar into the water supply tube. Let the vinegar run through the system to sanitize it. Then, don’t forget to wipe the water spout down with a clean cloth or cotton swab. It may sound like a lot to do, but once you get into the habit it’s really not. It’s truly a simple thing that will certainly help keep everyone in the household healthy!
